Clark Construction Picked As Developer of SDSU Mission Valley Site

San Diego State University Project Joins Additions Planned at Nearby UC San Diego

The redevelopment of San Diego's former National Football League Chargers stadium into a western campus for San Diego State University is another step closer to reality following the selection of a construction contractor this week.


San Diego State said Wednesday it chose Clark Construction Group from among three finalist bidders to oversee site development for the multi-phase satellite campus with residences, retail, offices and hotels that is planned to eventually take the place of the current 52-year-old Mission Valley stadium that was vacated in 2017 by the Chargers when the team moved to Los Angeles. University and city officials are currently in talks on a university purchase of 130 city-owned acres and other preliminary planning for the project, approved last year by San Diego voters.


The mixed-use campus in Mission Valley is deemed crucial to local economic development on one of the last large developable land parcels in central San Diego, as the region looks to replace activity lost when the Chargers left after playing in the local market for more than 50 years.


The plans also reflect one way that cities across the country are dealing with replacing aging or outmoded stadiums as they focus on adding more mixed-use, urban development at the sports-focused sites that could bring in more visitors – and their spending dollars – for longer stretches of time.


Bethesda, Maryland-based Clark Construction had previously been tapped by the university to lead construction for a new $250 million, 35,000-seat stadium that is planned for the site, to replace a portion of the former Chargers stadium. Plans for future phases of the SDSU satellite campus call for 4,600 apartments, 95,000 square feet of retail and other commercial development including hotels, though expected total costs for those elements have not been announced.


Clark and civil engineering partner Project Design Consultants was picked to also oversee elements including development of more than 80 acres of parks and open space that will be part of the SDSU Mission Valley campus, including a 34-acre river park. Stadium and park elements could be completed within the next three years once all approvals are granted, according to the university.


The project is not the only major university development project moving forward in San Diego. About 13 miles away, officials for University of California, San Diego's Design and Innovation building also chose a contractor Wednesday for its new $41 million project that is part of a larger overhaul of the university’s entrance gateway area.


At UC San Diego in La Jolla, Seattle-based contractor BNBuilders was picked to oversee construction of the 74,000-square-foot building that houses students in design and entrepreneurial studies. That building is among several being added, replaced or redeveloped as part of a larger overhaul of the university’s central entranceway complex.

Development activity at the university also stems from new San Diego trolley stations being built on campus as part of a larger regional $2 billion expansion of the light rail system, which will connect the campus to downtown and multiple other city neighborhoods for the first time. UC San Diego has also been changing up retail and restaurant offerings, and is in talks with multiple local restaurant operators, and also national retailers including Target, to open new venues on campus.


A BNBuilders statement said the new design and innovation building will emphasize collaborative workspaces, with construction expected to start by fall 2019 and conclude by early 2021.
